„… AND WHITE LIQUORICE MADE OF LAMBSKIN“
A MUSIC THEATRE PIECE ABOUT CHILDHOOD
For the music theatre piece “…and White Liquorice Made of Lambskin,” I developed a multimedia stage design that addresses the complex projection surfaces and dynamics in dealing with childhood asa life stage on multiple levels. The scenes are intentionally dreamlike, vague, and driven by an untamed spirit of play, inspired by counting rhymes and clapping games commonly heard on schoolyards and playgrounds. Simultaneously, the underlying reality of a diffuse experience of violence caused by an alcoholic mother remains palpably present in the performance. Childhood between light-heartedness and harsh reality, independence and heteronomy, projection surface and transfiguration.
Based on a cycle of poems by the Berlin poet Ulrike Almut Sandig, with compositions and sounds by Iris ter Schiphorst, performed and sung by the Berlin Girls’ Choir, the piece reflects on questions of independence and external control during childhood.
